Q&A with Erika Flowers, event coordinator for the Canal Dock Boathouse

New Haven Biz talks with Erika Flowers, event coordinator at the non-profit Canal Dock Boathouse. Now in the final stages of construction on New Haven's Long Wharf, the two-story complex will offer a variety of community boating opportunities and feature a 3,600-square-foot room available for events.

Flowers has been planning and coordinating events in New Haven and throughout Connecticut for almost 20 years.

Q: How has event planning changed in the last ten years for the New Haven area client? What are the must-haves?

A: I find that there are more people and businesses wanting to plan and produce more events and are looking to host these events in creative spaces other than the average hotel ballroom or restaurants. Must-haves are spacious venues, good parking and easy to find locations.

Q: What sorts of events can the boathouse host? What makes it unique?

A: We can host a variety, from private events like weddings, showers, birthday/anniversary celebrations to corporate events like meetings, conferences, award ceremonies and networking events. We expect community events to include art classes, health and fitness, fashion shows, concerts, fundraisers and boating events.

It really is a special venue. From every window in the Canal Dock Boathouse you have a beautiful water view, combined with a large outdoor deck, suspended approximately 25 to 30 feet above the water.

Q: What is one of your best pieces of advice when planning an event?

A: When planning an event, it's important to start with how many people you want to invite to ensure you choose the perfect location to host your event.
