CEO to lead Manchester Community College

Manchester Community College is adopting a new leadership structure that will include appointment of a full-time CEO instead of a school president.

The change is being pushed by the school's overseer -- the Connecticut State Colleges and Universities (CSCU) system, which is in charge of 17 colleges and universities in Connecticut.

It's not clear exactly what the CEO model aims to achieve. CSCU officials couldn't be reached for comment Monday morning.

The CSCU system will begin searching this fall for MCC's permanent CEO, who will begin in Jan. 2019. Meantime, MCC's interim dean of academic affairs Tanya Millner-Harlee began Friday as the school's interim CEO. She will oversee MCC's daily operations succeeding President Gena Glickman, who retires July 1 and becomes president of Massasoit Community College in Brockton, Mass.

MCC is the state's first CEO-led community college.

"I am very confident she can help keep the institution on track as we work to get a permanent leader for the campus," said Mark Ojakian, president of CSCU.

Millner-Harlee began at MCC in 2004 as a lecturer in developmental English, before serving as an English professor and co-chair of the English department. She was selected as interim dean of academic affairs in 2017.

She previously held faculty and administrative positions at Capitol College, Strayer University, North Virginia Community College, Park University, Northeastern University and Bridgewater State College.

The CSCU system's leadership transition at MCC comes after a regional accreditation group blocked its attempt to merge the state's 12 community colleges.

The denial, Ojakian has said, could force the system to close at least one of Connecticut's community colleges as they attempt to offset losses in state funding and declining enrollment.
