HBJ wins four national biz-pub awards

New England Business Media won 11 awards from the Alliance of Area Business Publishers on Saturday.

The Hartford Business Journal's editorial staff won four editorial excellence awards from the Alliance of Area Business Publishers, an industry association that represents dozens of business publications from around the country.

The awards were presented at AABP's annual summer conference June 23, in Washington D.C. Nearly 40 publications from the U.S., Canada and Australia competed for the awards.

HBJ received four first-place gold awards for medium-sized tabloids:

  • Best investigative reporting for a series of stories on CliniFlow Technologies, a New York-based company that was approved for $4 million in state incentives to relocate several medical-technology companies to Hartford while also facing fraud allegations from employees and investors in multiple other states, written by Greg Bordonaro and Matt Pilon.

  • Best local coverage of a national/economic story for a two-month-long series on Connecticut's opioid crisis and its impact on employers called "Opioids in the Workplace," written and edited by Matt Pilon, Gregory Seay, John Stearns and Greg Bordonaro.

"It's a great accomplishment by our editorial staff to be recognized in a national competition among some of the best business journals in the country," said HBJ Editor Greg Bordonaro. "HBJ's editorial team works hard every day to keep our readers up-to-date in print and online with the latest business news from around the region."

HBJ's sister publications -- Worcester Business Journal and MaineBiz, which are all owned by New England Business Media -- took home several awards as well.
