Hamden's Ibiza promises ADA fixes

A Spanish tapas restaurant in Hamden will make changes to its building to better accommodate people with disabilities, authorities said.

Ibiza Tapas Restaurant and Wine Bar, 1832 Dixwell Ave., and its landlord, Mangos LLC, agreed to the improvements to settle a complaint under the federal Americans with Disabilities Act, Connecticut U.S. Attorney John Durham said Friday.

In addition to adding accessible parking spaces, Mangos promised to remediate the sidewalk from the parking area to the building and add a ramp from the sidewalk to the entrance.

Meanwhile, Ibiza agreed to upgrades inside the restaurant, such as adding an accessible restroom, officials said.

Under the ADA, restaurants and other private businesses operating places of public accommodation cannot discriminate against people with disabilities.

The owners of Ibiza and Mangos have cooperated, avoiding the need for litigation, Durham's office said. Mangos promised to make changes the within a year; Ibiza vowed to complete the upgrades in 18 months.
