The first phase of the $55 million Meriden Commons mixed-income housing community officially opens Tuesday in downtown Meriden, with groundbreaking for the development's second phase taking place the same day.

The first phase of the transit-oriented development at 161 State St. offers 75 mixed-income apartments, from one- to three bedrooms, and 5,400 square feet of commercial space.

When completed in fall 2019, Meriden Commons II will feature 76 apartments in three buildings, with one- to four-bedroom floorplans. Both phases are replacements for the city's outdated public housing.

The Cloud Co. LLC and Pennrose Properties LLC, of Philadelphia, are the co-developers.

The development is done in partnership with the City of Meriden, the Meriden Housing Authority and Maynard Road Corp., the housing authority's development arm.
