Retail giant Target Corp. said it will start same-day delivery service for more than 2 million Connecticut households starting next week.

Target will tap Alabama-based online delivery platform Shipt, which it acquired late last year for $550 million, to enable the effort. Target has said it wants to offer same-day service to 65 percent of its stores before the 2018 holiday shopping season.

Same-day delivery covering more than 55,000 grocery, electronic, toy and home products will launch for Stamford area residents on Aug. 14, Hartford area residents on Aug. 16, and New Haven and Bridgeport area residents on Aug. 23, the company said.

To receive the service, customers must sign up for an annual membership with Shipt, which will offer a half-off promotional price of $49 for Connecticut residents who sign up before Aug. 23.

Deliveries on orders over $35 are free.

Shipt said it will hire over 200 new independent contractors, known as "Shipt Shoppers," to prepare for its ramp-up of Connecticut deliveries.
