Middlesex Supply selling to Mass. rival

The Middlesex Supply Co., a longtime Middletown plumbing-heating-air conditioning parts/equipment retailer with three Connecticut locations, says it's being sold to a fourth-generation Massachusetts plumbing-heating wholesaler.

The Portland Group, of Billerica, Mass., announced Thursday its pending acquisition of Middlesex Supply that the Miller family launched in 1929.

Financial terms were not disclosed. The Fox/Rose family, Portland Group's owners, said they expect to close the deal in late October.

Middlesex Supply, 180 E. Main St. Ext., has 20 employees and operates New Shepard Supply in Vernon and Clinton Supply in Clinton. A Portland Group spokesman says the company plans to retain the locations.

Portland Group, founded in 1930, has 220 workers and has wholesale branches in Massachusetts, Rhode Island, New Hampshire and Maine. It also has retail showrooms in Newton and Worcester, Mass.; Saco, Maine; and Providence, R.I.
