The Greater Connecticut Chapter of the Public Relations Society of America (PRSA) has honored Evelyn (Evie) Gard of Gateway Community College (GCC) in New Haven and Housatonic Community College (HCC) in Bridgeport with its Practitioner of the Year award for 2018.

Gard, associate dean of communications and marketing for both colleges, received the honor at PRSA/CT's annual Mercury Awards dinner on Oct. 25. The award recognizes outstanding achievement in integrated public affairs services.

Gard started at GCC in 2001 as director of public relations and marketing. She was promoted to associate dean in 2017 when her responsibilities were expanded to include communications and marketing operations for Housatonic Community College.

Derek Beere, president-elect of PRSA/CT, described Gard as "the consummate public-relations professional who does it all." He praised her for spearheading the consolidation of two PRSA chapters into one and rebuilding the organization in the state.

Gard was president of the Southern Connecticut Chapter of PRSA from 2007 to 2009. She assumed the role of president again in 2016 and worked to transition the organization into the Greater Connecticut Chapter.
