New Haven Chamber biz expo Thursday at Oakdale

The Greater New Haven Chamber of Commerce, in partnership with the Quinnipiac Chamber of Commerce, presents The Big Connect, the group's annual business exposition, this Thursday at the Toyota Oakdale Theatre in Wallingford.

With support from presenting sponsor Comcast Business, the event is billed as Connecticut's largest business expo, with some 70 exhibitors strutting their stuff for the more than 1,000 attendees expected.

Featured events throughout the day include:

  • The "Nonprofit Stars Align" awards breakfast (7:45-9 a.m.), which will highlight greater New Haven nonprofit organizations making a positive impact on the region. Also, select professionals working in nonprofits will be awarded grants to pursue graduate studies.
  • The Big Taste, a midday (11:30 a.m.-1 p.m.) "culinary adventure" showcasing the finest offerings of area restaurants and caterers (separate admission charge).
  • The Big Bash, a day-ending networking extravaganza to take place from 4:30 to 6 p.m. in the Oakdale's Xfinity Lounge.

Featured workshops include "Solving the Skills Gap in Manufacturing: Innovative CTE Initiatives" (7:45 a.m., Upstairs Lounge) moderated by Jamison Scott of the New Haven Manufacturers Association.

"Technology, Talent & Treasure: Building Partnerships for the 4.0 Ecosystem" will feature Mark T. Maybury, chief technology officer of Stanley Black & Decker.

Google's Bryan Caplan will lead a session on "Getting Your Business Online with Google" from 10:40 to 11:30 in the Oakdale's ConnectiCare Room.

At 10:40 a.m. Austin Auger, business development director for Tokyo-based CB&I Co., presents "Navigating the Cultural Minefield: Doing International Business in the 'America First' Era."

The afternoon will bring a sales session (1:15 p.m.), "Be the Firm Your Client Can't LIve Without," with Donna Bak, senior partner of Sandler Training and Brent Robertson of Fathom.

As part of a Women's Power Panel (2:45 p.m., Xfinity Lounge) panelists will discuss "How To Turn Strategic Partnerships into Game-Changers for Your Business."

Featured speakers include morning (9:45 a.m.) keynoter David L. Katz, MD, who will discuss "Cultivating Partnerships: Revealing the Truth About Food."

The afternoon keynote will be delivered by Mitchell West, regional director of Nextstar Media Group, who will discuss "Navigating Digital & Social Trends" at 1:15 p.m.

In addition, Bryan Caplan will lead a workshop on "Getting Your Business Online with Google" from 10:40 to 11:30 in the Oakdale's ConnectiCare Room.
