The interior of West Haven’s new Prospect Beach House.

With its gleaming quartz countertops, exposed brick and expansive views of the beach, Prospect Beach House doesn't look like your typical deli. In addition to sandwiches, the menu also features items like an Asian steak salad, Tuscan panini and eggs scrambled with smoked salmon.

"It's more of a gourmet sandwich shop," said owner Chris Walsh, who opened Prospect Beach House at 940 Ocean Ave. on Oct. 8. The menu will change with the seasons and includes espresso drinks and gluten-free items, he added.

Walsh passed by the corner storefront that is now home to his eatery every day for years on his way to his other venture, Duffy's Tavern on Campbell Avenue. The West Haven native lives nearby and grew up in the West Shore neighborhood, watching the 940 Ocean Ave. location turn over multiple times in incarnations as a deli, corner store and convenience store.

"I thought it was a tremendous spot; it just needed some TLC," Walsh said. Finally he made a move and began transforming the space with a "coastal farmhouse" design scheme, with simple, rustic decor. Central to the interior are views at three angles of West Haven's Seabluff Beach and Long Island Sound.

Business has been brisk since the restaurant's opening with local foot traffic, Duffy's patrons and beachgoers. Plans for the future include grab-and-go items for commuters and comfort food entrees, Walsh said.

"We've had a great response from the neighborhood," he added.

Prospect Beach House opens from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily with a full sandwich, salad, breakfast and children's menu.
