A Planet Fitness franchisee says it's acquired all Connecticut-based Cardio Express gyms and has plans to convert half of its remaining locations.

Cardio Express sites in East Hartford, Manchester, Southington and Vernon will be converted into Planet Fitness locations over the next six months, according to ECP-PF Holdings Group Inc., a Planet Fitness franchisee. The Cardio Express locations in Wethersfield, Tolland and Mansfield have already closed, and members of those locations will be transferred to nearby Planet Fitness sites, they said.

Terms of the acquisition were not disclosed. It's also unknown how many employees will be affected during the ownership transition.

At its peak, Cardio Express had more than two dozen locations in Connecticut, according to the Journal Inquirer.

New Hampshire-based Planet Fitness currently operates over 1,600 locations in the U.S. As of Sept. 2018, Planet Fitness reported more than 12.2 million members in North America, Puerto Rico, the Dominican Republic, Panama and Mexico.

ECP-PF Holdings Group says it operates 80 Planet Fitness locations across the U.S. and Canada, including 23 locations in Connecticut.

Known for affordable memberships, Planet Fitness markets itself as a "Judgement Free Zone" for novice and casual gym users.
