Beam me up: The final construction beam for Chapel Haven's new SAIL Universal building is hoisted into place at lunchtime Tuesday.

A noontime "topping off" ceremony marked the end of the beginning of construction of Chapel Haven's new four-story Schleifer Adult Independent Living (SAIL) Universal building at 1040 Whalley Avenue.

The new building, scheduled for completion in early 2020, is the latest piece in a $41.5 million campus transformation project that will enable Chapel Haven to provide lifelong care enabling its clients, adults with disabilities, to live independently into their senior years.

The Schleifer Adult Independent Living building is a state-of-the-art, 48,500-square-foot residential, community and "engagement" facility designed to be intergenerational. Previously, as Chapel Haven's clients entered their senior years, they needed to relocate to assisted-living facilities or nursing homes. Now clients can transition into their golden years without leaving friends and familiar surroundings behind, explained Chapel Haven's Catherine DeCarlo.

Phase I of Chapel Haven's expansion project now draws to a close. It includes a new 32,500-square-foot residential and classroom building to house Chapel Haven's REACH program, which for nearly half a century has helped adults with cognitive and social disabilities learn to live independently.

It also includes a new Welcome Center, punctuated by a curved glass lobby and reception space that draws residents and visitors into a likewise new outdoor courtyard.

The $41.5 million campus transformation is the product of a partnership between Chapel Haven and its design-build team, the Glastonbury-based S/L/A/M Collaborative.
