Online fresh food grocer FreshDirect is extending its service into four more communities in southern Connecticut.

Residents in Fairfield, Norwalk, Southport and Westport can now use the service, the company announced this week. Previously, the company served Greenwich, Stamford, New Canaan and Darien.

Paula-Jo (PJ) Oleksak, chief growth officer at FreshDirect, said the company's new headquarters is in the Bronx, N.Y., which allows it to expand its reach further into Connecticut.

"The decision was also based on an amazing amount of requests that we've received over the past several years from residents of these towns, many of whom were long-time FreshDirect customers before moving to the area," Oleksak said. "We have a long wait list of customers who we will be reaching out to directly in the coming weeks to rekindle our relationship."

FreshDirect, a privately held company that launched in 2002, delivers a variety of groceries, including fresh meat, fish, produce and specialty items to customers in seven states.

Company officials indicated they have plans for further geographic expansion later this year and into early 2020, though it is not yet announcing specific towns and cities.

However, Oleksak said the company's immediate goal is to serve as many customers as possible in the Northeast, including the New Haven region.

"New Haven is a very attractive market for us, and it's absolutely our plan to reach customers there as soon as possible," Oleksak said.

Connecticut as a whole is an "important part" of the company's expansion plan, she added.

"Our current and future customers in this market are food-lovers and they expect the very best in service and the highest-quality, freshest food," Oleksak said. "Those are our favorite customers and we are committed to serving them soon."

FreshDirect CEO David McInerney said the additional service areas in Connecticut and other states represent the company's first expansion since relocating to its new South Bronx campus. The company also just added more than a dozen cities in Maryland and Virginia to its service area.

"Last year was a transition year for FreshDirect with the opening of our state-of-the-art new facility, but we're excited to announce that the company is returning to growth and expansion in 2019 and beyond," McInerney said.

The company is adding new products and putting more trucks on the road to ensure deliveries arrive on time, he added.
