CT ranks No. 37 rank in highway study

12/21/09

A new report says Connecticut's roads have worsened in recent years, even though the states spends more than other states on average to maintain them.

The Reason Foundation's study says Connecticut ranked ninth in 2007 in roadwork spending at $305,356 per mile.

But the report says congestion and the condition of its bridges hurts the cost-effectiveness of that spending, ranking the state 37th in how much bang it gets for its buck.

A state Department of Transportation spokesman says the information isn't a surprise, given the age of Connecticut's infrastructure. But he says the state's roads are very safe and officials are working to make them more efficient.

The libertarian-leaning Reason Foundation has been issuing the roads study for 18 years. (AP)
