Malloy officially in race

03/10/10

Former Stamford Mayor Dannel Malloy has officially announced his candidacy for Connecticut governor, saying he brings the most experience and qualifications to the race, the Associated Press reports.

The Democrat declared his bid Wednesday outside the State Elections Enforcement Commission offices in Hartford, where more than a 100 supporters gathered.

He and Greenwich businessman Ned Lamont are the only declared Democratic candidates seeking to succeed Republican Gov. M. Jodi Rell, who is not running for re-election. Several other Democrats are still exploring possible bids for governor.

Unlike Lamont, Malloy is participating in the state's public financing system and has raised about $100,000 in small donations toward the $250,000 threshold that's needed to receive public funds. (AP)
