Retail sales get boost in February

U.S. retail and food services sales increased last month, a sign that an economic recovery could be taking shape.

The U.S. Census Bureau announced today that U.S. retail and food services sales for February grew 0.3 percent to $355.5 billion.

Total sales for the December 2009 through February 2010 period were up 4.5 percent from the same period a year ago.

Retail trade sales were up 0.3 percent from January 2010 and 4.4 percent above last year. Gasoline stations sales were up 24 percent from February 2009 and nonstore retailers sales were up 11.8 percent from last year.

Meanwhile, auto sales saw a 2 percent decline in sales last month, bringing in $57.8 billion.
