Extraordinary times have a way of way of illuminating extraordinary leaders. The eight women we celebrate inside as our 2010 winners in the Hartford Business Journal’s eighth annual Women in Business Awards represent what has always been our region’s greatest strength - depth of talent, experience and ability to meet any challenge head on.
A difficult economy has spared few industries in Greater Hartford. Many of our winners’ organizations have had to adjust to tighter budgets, smaller staffs, and declining revenue, making future planning unusually difficult. At the same time, they have had to demonstrate exceptional steadiness and leadership to their employees. They’ve had to identify new revenue streams and plan and budget for uncertain futures, all the while doing so with an infectious confidence that conveys to their customers, clients and employees that as the economy improves, so, too, will they emerge stronger than ever, poised for solid growth.
Our winners come from business, academia, state service and the non-profit world. Their working environments may be different but they share traits that cross professions and empower them during difficult periods. More than anything, they possess an optimism that inspires those around them. They bring strong compassion and a sense of responsibility for those under their charge. They demonstrate this not only in their workplaces but by their involvement in their surrounding communities.
Not surprising, they are an accomplished mix of executives who learned the habit of success early in their lives. To a person, they acknowledge significant influential individuals and mentors who helped them clarify their goals, channel their passions and keep them on track.
We’d also like to give a special thanks to the Wadsworth Atheneum Museum of Art in Hartford, a truly inspiring place of its own, for hosting the photo shoot for this year’s Eight Remarkable Women. Please join me in congratulating our winners. They’re an important part or our region’s foundation for growth and continued prosperity and serve as exemplary role models for Hartford’s next generation of leaders.
