Otis gets a lift from LAX contract

08/10/10

Otis Elevator Co. in Bristol will deliver 88 energy-efficient elevators, escalators and moving walkways as part of a major upgrade of Los Angeles International Airport, the world's busiest.

The deal for undisclosed terms also provides Otis with a five-year servicing contract.

In serving more than 15.1 million international passengers a year, the upgrades to LAX's Tom Bradley International Terminal will provide Otis with a showcase for its people-moving technology, officials said.

Otis will provide 40 of new generation energy-efficient elevators; 38 escalators, and 10 moving walkways.

"Our advanced technology will be integral in providing safe and reliable transportation solutions to the airport's millions of travelers each year," Otis President Didier Michaud-Daniel said in a statement.

The Bradley West project is the biggest public works project in Los Angeles' history and is scheduled for completion in December 2012.

The project is designed to achieve Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Silver certification from the U.S. Green Building Council.

Otis is a unit of United Technologies Corp. in Hartford.
