UTC Power sells 8 fuel cells to Calif. bus operator

05/07/08

UTC Power, a subsidiary of United Technologies Corp., will sell eight fuel cell systems to an Oakland, Calif., bus system.

UTC Power said that it's the largest sale of fuel cell power systems for public buses in the United States,

AC Transit, which serves more than 67 million passengers a year, also agreed to options for an additional 13 units to power its hybrid-electric fuel cell buses scheduled for delivery next year and in 2010.

The benefits of fuel cells are fuel efficiency, no emissions and quiet operation.

UTC Power has sold fuel cells for six buses in Hartford, Oakland, Palm Desert, Calif., and in Belgium.

Ken Stewart, vice president of transportation for UTC Power, says cost is a major reason why fuel cell buses are not more widespread. He says a bus with a fuel cell power plant costs about $2 million, four times the cost of a conventional diesel bus.
