Editorial On Delivery Tax Was 'Spot On'

05/12/08

To The Editor,

As the president of the Connecticut Messenger Courier Association, it was gratifying to read the editorial (“Deliver Us,” April 28) in which you criticized both the proposed sales tax on delivery services within Connecticut and the manner in which this tax came out of committee. Your observations were “spot on,” as the British would say.

The larger municipalities of our state are faced with a complex set of socio-economic problems that deserve an informed and rational debate about how we go about solving them. However, one does not effectively solve those problems by sneaking out of a closed room and sticking a gun in the ribs of the Connecticut taxpayers at large. And by proposing to enact this tax without either public notice or a public hearing, that is essentially what the Finance, Revenue and Bonding Committee has done.

Adding to the tax burden of the citizens of this state at a time when they are already struggling with the escalating costs of food and fuel simply cannot be justified, and the way the Committee went about it is most certainly not how our democratic process is supposed to work.

I have been watching with great interest the recent television series about John Adams. I was reminded of one of the rallying cries of the American Revolution: “No taxation without representation!” While the actions of the Finance, Revenue and Bonding Committee aren’t exactly that, they’re way too close to it for my liking.
