Caren Kittredge

Head of national marketing, local and regional business, Aetna

Who is your most influential role model, and why?
I’m not sure that I have a single role model to point to. My parents really influenced my basic approach to things. From a career perspective, I have been very fortunate to have had a wide variety of people who have influenced me throughout my career and outside interests. I have had the benefit of direct mentors and the benefit of learning by watching and being exposed to some very talented people.

Why are you good at what you do?

I think I have been successful because I’m willing to take on new challenges. When I get involved in something new, I work to learn as much as I can and ask lots of questions. I try to apply the same principles and approach I use at work to the different projects I am involved with in the community. I believe the opportunities I’ve had that exposed me to different situations and environments  have really helped me to continually refine and develop my business acumen.

How does your organization give back to the community, and what role have you played in those efforts?

Aetna is a great community partner and that commitment to community is engrained in our culture. We believe in being involved in the communities where we live, work and serve. I have helped develop programs that connect some of Aetna’s business interests to the needs within the community. I have also had the opportunity to volunteer and hold leadership positions with organizations like the Bushnell Park Foundation, the Judicial Review Council, the Public Service and Trust Commission of the Judicial Branch, the Economic Development Commission in Glastonbury and the Bradley International Airport Board of Directors.  Kittredge makes a presentation about Aetna’s products.

When the stress level gets too high, what’s your secret remedy?
I think that sometimes you have to take a step back, take a deep breath and look for some perspective. Then, refocus your efforts on what you are trying to accomplish. If you can break things up into more manageable pieces, it can take a little pressure off. Sometimes a quick priority check helps to determine what can come off the list for today or if a course correction is needed in order to achieve your goals. Humor is also a great remedy.

How have you tried to balance your career and your personal life? Give an example or two.

Balance can be a little tricky sometimes, but it’s important. Careers require a lot of effort and focus so it’s important to enjoy what you do. I am very fortunate to have a close family and great friends who are very supportive – even with my busy schedule.  Having things outside the office to look forward to, things like attending a school play, or going to a game or other event, is key to achieving balance. I think it’s also important to try and find a little quiet time when you can.Centered, above, is Caren Kittredge, at the Bushnell Park Foundation Summer Solstice, with, from left, Jen DeStefani, a Bushnell Park Foundation member, former University of Connecticut basketball player Donny Marshall and Jennifer DiBella, also with the foundation.
