Tate George, Konover team up

Former University of Connecticut basketball standout C. Tate George and West Hartford developer Simon Konover announced today they are partnering to develop real estate projects in underserved areas of Connecticut's major cities.

The George Group, of Newark, N.J., and The Simon Konover Co. said they initially will focus on identifying suitable commercial and residential projects in Hartford, Bridgeport, New Haven, Norwalk and Waterbury. The partners say they intend to develop, own and operate urban properties.

The principals say that in coming months they will reach out to community leaders throughout the state to identify development opportunities.

"Too often, retail, commercial and housing development overlooks under-served urban communities and markets," Konover said in a statement. "Many developers tend to build in suburban areas and miss the opportunity to strengthen our cities by putting underutilized properties back into productive use, and supporting smart-growth strategies that create sustainable communities. Our effort seeks to change that model."

Konover adds more than a half-century of experience in residential and commercial real estate development and management. Current projects include the Dye House mill reconstruction in Manchester and the Corbin Heights supportive housing construction in New Britain.

The George Group is developing projects, including Baxter Terrace and the West Ward scattered site development, both in Newark; and the Arcadian Gardens site in East Orange, N.J. The firm also is involved in Florida real estate development.

"Cities will be the center of economic activity once the national economy begins to rebound," George said. "We believe that our combined strengths will play an important role in helping create development opportunities that will serve both the financial interests and social fabric of the community."
