George Salpietro out at Fidelco

06/23/09

The Fidelco Guide Dog Foundation said today George J. Salpietro Jr., the Bloomfield nonprofit's most ardent and visible promoter for a decade, is out as executive director.George J. Salpietro Jr., former executive director of The Fidelco Guide Dog Foundation

Salpietro, 54, who has run the organization since 1999 as senior vice president and executive director, spent his last day at Fidelco on Friday, said spokesman Jack Hayward.

Hayward did not specify a reason for Salpietro's departure.

"Obviously, the Fidelco board was involved in this decision," Hayward said.

Attempts today to contact Salpietro for comment were unsuccessful.

The foundation said it will conduct an executive search for Salpietro's replacement. Salpietro's annual salary was $207,750 in fiscal 2007, according to the charity's latest public filing.

Founded by Connecticut industrialist Charles Kaman, Fidelco is dedicated to promoting increased independence to blind men and women by providing them with highly-trained German shepherd guide dogs.

Salpietro has traveled throughout Connecticut and the U.S. recounting the story of how, after losing his sight in 1994 at age 40, the former auto industry worker's outlook on life improved once he got his first Fidelco guide dog, Karl.

Reader response:

"I am shocked at the salary that George received. I will not be making donations in the future. So that is where the money goes....what about the other dedicated hard working staff that make a very small salary. WHAT ABOUT THE GUIDE DOGS! Non profit...what a bunch of baloney!'' -- Dave and Linda

"I am shocked and saddened by the departure of George Salpietro from Fidelco. His total devotion to that organization was always very visible and inspired so many others. I'll be very interested to see who and what type person will head the foundation. IHopefully someone with the love, enthusiasm and 'vision' for Fidelco, comparable to Mr. Salpietro will be found, but I think it will be almost impossible to replace him.'' -- Carol Marchigiano

I had worked for George Salpietro at Fidelco from 2003 to 2005 and am shocked it took this long to get this "man" out of his position. This hopefully is the first step to overhauling upper management in that organization. Scratch the surface, you'll be appalled.
