14 CT companies make 2021 Fortune 500

Fourteen companies based in Connecticut made the 2021 Fortune 500 list, with Bloomfield health insurer Cigna leading the pack and holding steady from last year at No. 13.

This year’s edition of the famous list — which organizes U.S. corporations by total revenue — featured 13 Connecticut repeats and one newcomer, elevator and escalator manufacturer Otis Worldwide, which spun off from the former United Technologies Corp. — now Raytheon Technologies Corp. — in 2020. Farmington-based Otis placed at No. 236, with revenue of $12.7 billion, according to Fortune’s analysis.

Cigna remained the highest-earning company in the state, at least in terms of total revenue, which amounted to $160.4 billion. The health insurer is a fixture in the upper echelon of Fortune’s list, routinely ranking alongside businesses such as Costco, Microsoft, Home Depot and JPMorgan Chase.

Telecommunications giant Charter Communications, which has its headquarters in Stamford, came in second among the Connecticut cohort at No. 64, an improvement from No. 71 one year ago.

Also appearing on this year’s list were The Hartford (No. 142), Stamford-based consumer financial services company Synchrony (No. 187), transportation and logistics provider XPO Logistics (No. 190), New Britain tools and hardware maker Stanley Black & Decker (No. 209), construction services firm EMCOR Group (No. 344), Wallingford-based cable and fiber optic systems producer Amphenol (No. 349), equipment rental company United Rentals (No. 352), Greenwich insurer W.R. Berkley Corp. (No. 372), Norwalk-based Frontier Communications (No. 402), information technology firm Xerox (No. 415) and travel website operator Booking Holdings (No. 424).

At least two other companies with close connections to Connecticut also ranked.

Travelers Cos., which is headquartered in New York City but has its largest office in Hartford, came in at No. 98, while Eversource Energy, which technically maintains dual headquarters in Boston and Hartford, placed at No. 338.

This year’s Fortune 500 represents about $13.8 trillion in revenues, or about two-thirds of the U.S. economy.

As has been the case for all but three years since 2002, Bentonville, Arkansas-based retailer Walmart took the No. 1 spot in 2021, with estimated revenue of $559.1 billion. Amazon placed a distant second, followed by Apple, CVS Health and UnitedHealth Group. Berkshire Hathaway, McKesson, drug wholesaler AmerisourceBergen, Google parent company Alphabet and Exxon Mobil filled out the top 10.
