2021 Power 25 Health Care: Deborah Weymouth

Deborah Weymouth is the CEO of Eastern Connecticut Health Network (ECHN), which operates Manchester Memorial and Rockville General hospitals, a 130-bed skilled nursing facility and a medical group of over 400 providers.

Like all hospital networks, ECHN had to deal with the financial difficulties caused by the pandemic, mainly a drop in elective procedures at the beginning of the outbreak last spring. But ECHN has had a long recent history of financial and other issues, which eventually led it to getting acquired by California-based for-profit Prospect Medical Holdings in 2016. Prospect also owns Waterbury Hospital.

That deal has brought a lot of scrutiny as Connecticut hospitals have traditionally operated as not-for-profit entities.

In fiscal 2019, before Weymouth arrived at ECHN, Prospect’s Connecticut operations reported an operating loss of $8.7 million and an overall $18.9 million loss.

She's currently working to consolidate Manchester Memorial Hospital and Rockville General Hospital under a single license, a move the health system said would eliminate redundant administrative processes, enhance the patient experience, and save money.

Weymouth came to ECHN in Sept. 2019, after a career in health care, including most recently five years leading the UMass Memorial Health Alliance-Clinton Hospital in Massachusetts.

Prior to that, she spent several years in the Western Connecticut Health Network as a senior vice president. Her longest healthcare stint, according to her LinkedIn profile, was 15 years at UR Thompson Health in Rochester, N.Y
