2022 Power 25 Health Care: Dr. Ronald Adelman

As the immediate past president of the Connecticut State Medical Society, Dr. Ronald Adelman has advocated for retaining physicians in the state and patient care.

The ophthalmologist, professor and director of Retina and Macula Service at the Yale School of Medicine is also a mentor and trainer of medical students, residents, fellows, and young physicians.

He’s been on the frontlines advocating for policies that aim to keep doctors in the state.

Earlier this year, he penned an op-ed calling on state lawmakers to address Connecticut’s high cost of doctor training, high risk of liability, overall cost of living and lack of loan forgiveness programs — all factors driving a doctor brain drain.

Adelman noted that Connecticut ranked No. 47 in the country in 2021 for retaining physicians trained in-state, according to the Association of American Medical Colleges.

Adelman is also well-known for his work as an ophthalmology expert.

He serves as the scientific director of the European Vitreo-Retinal Society and president of the Connecticut Society of Eye Physicians and Surgeons.

Adelman has been published extensively, primarily in the area of retinal and macular diseases and surgery. He has been in nearly 100 publications and 250 abstracts. He also serves on the editorial board of several scientific journals and serves on the executive committee of several medical societies.

Adelman received his MBA from the Yale University School of Management in 2011, and was a fellow at Harvard Medical School-Massachusetts Eye & Ear Infirmary, Vitreo-retinal Diseases and Surgery in 2001.
