2022 Power 25 Health Care: William Fish Jr.

William Fish Jr. is the lead Connecticut attorney for St. Francis Hospital and Medical Center in the care provider’s well-publicized lawsuit against Hartford HealthCare and its subsidiaries – including Hartford Hospital.

The lawsuit claims Hartford HealthCare has tried to create a monopoly on hospital services by acquiring physician networks and demanding they refer patients only to Hartford HealthCare facilities.

The 75-page lawsuit, filed in federal court in January 2022, accuses HHC of trying to “bury” and “crush” St. Francis.

HHC, which has denied the allegations, asked the judge to dismiss the case in February, arguing that it had not violated antitrust laws and that St. Francis was outcompeted for physicians.

The lawsuit is still pending but could have significant implications on the state’s healthcare system, which has undergone significant consolidation over the last decade, raising concerns about market power and cost of care.

The high-profile lawsuit is the latest in Fish’s long career, primarily with Hinckley Allen in Hartford, where he’s been a partner since 2008.

Fish’s practice spans across a broad range of legal disciplines including health care; business services; complex commercial litigation; bankruptcy and creditors’ rights; real estate; and the First Amendment.

Fish once represented a client in the purchase of a large Chicago hospital. Fish said the client bought the hospital for $1 and then sold it several years later for eight figures to a publicly-traded company.

Fish has several specialties including as a First Amendment expert. He’s represented media outlets including the Hartford Courant in various lawsuits.

Fish received his law degree from the University of Virginia School of Law in 1983. He has also completed an Ironman Triathlon, multiple marathons and the Trans-Alp Cycling Race.
