Carey Manufacturing makes catches, latches, handles, spacers, standoffs, captive panel hardware and customer fasteners and case hardware for military, aerospace, computer, electronics, telecom, automotive and consumer applications.
Tell us a bit about your recent accomplishments.
In 2015, we began reshoring our products from China. We invested upwards of $3 million in laser cutters, a nitrogen generation system and a new quality-inspection area.
It took years to streamline the process and we made every mistake in the book, but reshoring created 10 new jobs and now 90% of our products are made and assembled in our Cromwell facility.
What are your family values and how do they contribute to your business success?
In our family, we celebrate everyone and everything and it’s something we’ve brought into our business. We do company events several times a year, including cookouts, companywide contests and celebrating random holidays like Strawberry Shortcake Day.
Everyone that works for Carey is important and appreciated and we want to make sure they know that.
Where do you see your business in the next five years?
Since reshoring, we have really discovered our place in the market. The way we manufacture allows us to make small run, custom parts at a lower cost than our competitors. We are planning to use this to continue to grow by increasing our custom work and expanding our product lines.
Do you have a business succession plan?
Yes, while the exact timing is not in motion yet. Mike and Alison have been taking on increasing roles in the organization. Mike is the general manager and Alison is representing the company publicly.
What are your guiding business principles?
At Carey, we strive to make quality products for our customers. We are constantly working to do things better and more efficiently. We accomplish this goal by listening to and working with our customers, suppliers, co-workers and peers.
