Taniqua Huguley-Chaplin is the director of economic mobility at United Way of Central and Northeastern CT. In her role, she works to create programs and resources that help individuals and families in the community to become economically secure.

She also leads the Hartford Working Cities initiative. This program’s vision is for Hartford to be a place where young adults have the skills and talents needed by local and regional businesses.

She also leads the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) coalition. Working in collaboration with community partners, her coalition served more than 13,000 families in the region this season, securing nearly $28 million back to the community in tax credits and refunds. Huguley-Chaplin is also the founder and CEO of Black Girls Achieve, an enrichment program that provides Black girls with the skills and tools needed to navigate Black girlhood.

Why do you deserve to be a 40 Under Forty?

• I have made positively impactful contributions in the Hartford community related to economic mobility, housing and youth and young adult development.

• I create opportunities for youth and young adults to become successful leaders and change agents.

• I work to create cross-sector collaboration between community organizations and residents.

What’s been your biggest professional accomplishment so far in your career?

During my short time with United Way, I have established two cohorts of the Young Legends Leadership Academy, and more than 40 young adults have successfully completed the program.

I also helped reestablish the Career Navigation Community of Practice, providing over 50 career navigators with professional development opportunities. I also worked to launch the North Hartford Ascend Pipeline and North Hartford Navigation Hub, connecting families in North Hartford to resources and services.

How are you involved in the community?

I work, live and play in Hartford. I am a true community builder and leader.

What do you like to do outside of work?

I like to binge-watch TV shows and travel the globe with my husband. I also mentor girls through my Black Girls Achieve program.

Fun Fact

I organize international cultural exchange trips for girls in middle and high school.
