2024 C-Suite Honoree: Tyler Booth

Tyler Booth is executive vice president and chief operations officer of InterCommunity Health Care, a $45 million nonprofit community healthcare agency that provides care to nearly 10,000 people in their clinic, residential, school and community-based settings. Booth oversees all care delivery aspects of the agency’s 48 programs and 20 locations.

The creator of multiple care system innovations that have received national recognition, he also provides regional and national consultation.

What have been your biggest professional accomplishments over the past year?

This has been a busy year for me and for InterCommunity. Much of our efforts have been dedicated to restructuring our residential programs, including creating a new level of care for Connecticut to align with statewide payment changes.

However, what I am most proud of is the creation of The Gallery at InterCommunity. Committed to removing barriers to care and recognizing the connection between art and well-being, the gallery provides free access to museum-quality works by local artists.

In our first year, more than 1,000 people enjoyed three different exhibits at the only free art gallery in East Hartford. It has been an honor to help bring high-quality art to non-traditional museum-goers.

The Gallery at InterCommunity is located at 287 Main St., in East Hartford and is open Monday-Thursday, 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., and Fridays, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

In what ways are you involved in the community?

I am a board/committee member of a half-dozen nonprofit, education and healthcare agencies including Capital Area Healthcare Partnership, Glastonbury Youth & Family Services, Advanced Behavioral Health, Yale’s Center for Health & Justice, CT State’s Micro-Credentialing, and multiple health and human service task forces.

On the job

Guiding business principle: If care isn’t good enough for my family, it isn’t good enough for anyone’s family, which is why I (and my entire family) get our primary care at InterCommunity.

Best way to keep your competitive edge: Any change must first pass a litmus test of positively impacting client experience and health outcomes, better supporting staff, and being financially advantageous.

Best business decision: Refocusing from exclusively behavioral health services to providing whole-person health care for all. InterCommunity clients have access to fully integrated physical health, mental health and addiction recovery services.

Worst business decision: Financially speaking, we provide all care (from withdrawal management to psychiatry to outpatient medical care) to everyone regardless of their ability to pay, but we do it because it is the right thing to do.

Biggest missed opportunity: Over the past 18 years, I’ve had the honor of working with many talented people. Some have moved on, bringing the InterCommunity philosophy to leadership positions in other agencies. Although I’m proud to know they are carrying our good work forward, they would still complement my amazing team and are missed.

Goal yet to be achieved: Opening a daycare in the North End of Hartford to provide affordable child care to community members and free child care to staff and clients while receiving services. A portion of the staff will be women in/recent graduates from our women and children’s program who will gain skills and income to best support their aftercare.

Personal touch in your office: My office and meeting rooms always have one wall with whiteboard paint so that everyone can sketch out the next innovation whenever inspiration strikes.
