New England Flagger Services was founded in 2008, and is a 100% woman-owned traffic control company, providing flagging services throughout Connecticut roadways. The company’s flaggers help traffic and pedestrians move safely through construction zones while crews complete their jobs. Clients range from major utility companies to private paving and construction organizations.
Tell us about your company’s history.
Prior to opening my company, I (Kristine Jones) was a Montessori preschool teacher. I loved my job and remained open-minded to all opportunities that would come my way.
On a road trip back from Florida in 2008, my husband and I were driving through the Blue Ridge Mountains. We started talking and he mentioned that Connecticut needed a good flagging company. He told me about what flaggers do. I said, ‘I can do that.’
So, in a nutshell, when we got back home, I looked up all the rules and regulations to own such a company. I decided to start up. I networked to secure a few clients, had some friends who had adult kids that needed jobs, and ended up with four to seven employees working.
In 2009, I was awarded a substantial utility contract, and again another substantial utility contract in 2012. We have maintained both contracts along with many private entities. We now serve over 42 contractors. We continue to hire employees throughout Connecticut.
