Winner Category | Healthcare Prevention

St. Francis Hospital’s Injury Prevention Team has a mission to develop and implement sustainable, innovative, comprehensive education and prevention initiatives that reduce the occurrence and consequence of injury, ensuring safer communities. The two main programs provided by the team are Let’s Not Meet By Accident (LNMBA) and Stop the Bleed.

What have been the team’s significant contributions to the organization in the past year?

The team has partnered with local schools, driver education programs, youth groups, court programs and community organizations to provide educational opportunities centered around injury prevention.

We established partnerships with several high schools in the greater Hartford area, including Weaver, Classical Magnet, Hartford High, Conard, Hall High and Kaynor Technical. Since our injury prevention program was revitalized in 2022, we have had 459 students participate in our LNMBA program, which includes Stop the Bleed training.

We have also trained 336 individuals from local schools on just Stop the Bleed, and over 400 attendees at Dunkin’ Park at a Yard Goats game.

What are some major challenges the team had to overcome?

The biggest challenge for our team was revamping the program following the peak of the COVID-19 pandemic.

By 2023, things were getting back to normal and allowed us to connect with leadership at local schools to reintroduce injury prevention programs, build relationships and begin instruction again.

What’s the team’s next major goal and/or challenge?

We strive to continue building relationships with local school systems and expanding our reach beyond Hartford.

This includes providing instruction to teachers and leaders to demonstrate the importance of the life-saving tools and informational programs. We will also expand our participation in health fairs and community events to further spread the word.

Team Members: Dr. Jennifer Martin; Francisco Moran, RN; T. Russell Hill, PA; Tracy Fox, RN; Theodore Rogers; Patrick Gauthier; and Eric Ducat
