540 additional residential units planned for The Hartford’s former Simsbury campus

The Ridge at Talcott Mountain - South, a 540 residential development planned for The Hartford's former Simsbury campus on Hopmeadow Street.

A New Jersey developer that has been redeveloping The Hartford’s former Simsbury office campus on Hopmeadow Street wants to add hundreds of additional housing units to the property.

The Silverman Group has a plan before the Simsbury Zoning Commission that calls for 540 new residential units, including construction of 14 buildings that would house 448 apartments.

Each three-story, 43,715-square-foot building would contain 32 apartments mixing one- and two-bedroom units.

The developer also wants to build 11 duplexes and 70 single-family homes. Amenities would include a community facility, pool and playground, according to plans.

A public hearing on the proposal is scheduled for Wednesday night.

The Silverman Group acquired The Hartford’s former Simsbury campus in 2016 for $8.5 million, and then quickly demolished the insurer’s 640,000 square feet of office space on the 172-acre property.

Since that time, Silverman has built The Ridge at Talcott Mountain, a 183-unit amenity-rich rental property that includes one- and two-bedroom apartments and two-bedroom townhomes.

The new residential development — to be called  The Ridge at Talcott Mountain - South — would be located next to the existing apartments. Another developer has also built a 120-unit assisted living facitliy on-site.
