Abcam to shutter Branford facility, lay off workers

Life sciences company AxioMx Inc., doing business as Abcam, notified the state this week that it plans to permanently close its Branford operations, resulting in up to 32 layoffs.

The U.K.-based company’s Branford facility is at 688 East Main St. 

The company filed a Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification Act (WARN) notice with the state Department of Labor on Thursday.

The terminations are expected to begin around June 30, according to the notice from the company’s global head of human resources, Tracy Xie.

Some of the impacted workers may be offered positions at other company locations, potentially reducing the number of layoffs, according to the notice. Abcam’s closest U.S. location is in Boston.

The Branford location has been home to a research and development team. The company provides scientists worldwide with products to help with their research, including antibodies, reagents and kits. The products assist with drug discovery and diagnostics, according to the company’s website.
