Advocates push transit development on New Haven, Fairfield

Four Connecticut advocate groups are trying to convince officials in Fairfield and New Haven counties of the benefits of transit-oriented development.

The Connecticut Fund for the Environment, Partnership for Strong Communities, Regional Plan Association, and Tri-State Transportation Campaign are holding two regional workshops to explain the community benefits of transit-oriented development.

In transit-oriented development, cities and towns zone for heavy residential, retail, or commercial density around transit stops – such as train or bus stations – so people can walk to and from the public transit, instead of needing cars to travel.

The first workshop, called Help Your Town Grab a TOD Advantage, will be at 9 a.m. Thursday at the Bridgeport City Hall Annex.
