CVS Health has lined up a successor for the top job at Hartford-based Aetna as current Aetna chief Karen S. Lynch prepares to take the reins from longtime CVS CEO Larry Merlo early next year.
In a statement released this week, company officials announced that Daniel Finke, who currently leads Aetna’s commercial business and markets organization, will become president of CVS Health’s health care benefits segment effective Feb. 1, 2021.
The position is roughly anal
ogous to president of Aetna, since the health care benefits division consists of Aetna’s legacy health insurance business, which CVS Health acquired in 2018 in a deal worth approximately $69 billion. Finke will also take on the role of executive vice president within CVS Health.
“Dan’s dedication to the health of our members and passion around addressing health care disparities make him the ideal person to take the health care benefits segment forward,” Lynch said. “Dan has a track record of driving growth, delivering strong operating improvements, and bringing customer-driven innovations to the market.”
Finke joined Aetna in 2014. Prior to that, he served as president and chief operating officer of EmblemHealth, a health insurance firm based in New York City. Between 2004 and 2008, he worked at WellPoint, which eventually became Anthem.
“I’m committed to simplifying the health experience for members using digital solutions and bringing to market CVS Health integrated products that demonstrate our unique ability to serve the needs of our customers,” Finke said.
Company officials said Finke will report directly to Lynch going forward.
Lynch on Friday was officially named to replace the outgoing Merlo, who has headed the Woonsocket, Rhode Island-based health care giant for close to a decade. She is expected to take over the job on Feb. 1, 2021.
As of February, CVS Health will be the largest Fortune 500 company to be run by a woman.
