After 6th men’s basketball title win, will CT fans soon be able to bet on more UConn games?

UConn Athletics The UConn men's basketball team celebrates its sixth national championship Monday night in Phoenix, Arizona.

University of Connecticut sports fans are riding high following the men’s basketball team’s sixth national championship win Monday night, and a new proposal could allow residents to place more bets on UConn and other statewide college athletic programs.

House Bill 5284, introduced by the General Assembly’s Public Safety and Security Committee earlier this year, revises several parts of the state’s gambling regulations. Specifically, it expands the ability of Connecticut bettors to legally wager on in-state college sports. That includes sports games involving teams from any college, university or other higher education institution in Connecticut.

Current state statutes only allow wagers on games involving Connecticut college teams when they’re in a tournament consisting of four or more teams, meaning fans can bet during competitions like the recent NCAA March Madness tournament, but not on most regular season games.

House Bill 5284, however, would still restrict bets placed on individual players, also known as prop bets.

Connecticut legalized sports betting in 2021. In addition to online offerings, sports betting sites have opened up throughout the state, including at Foxwoods and Mohegan Sun casinos, and in downtown Hartford’s XL Center.

The UConn men’s team became tied with North Carolina as the third-winningest college basketball program ever with its 75-60 victory over Purdue Monday night to win the 2024 NCAA Division I national championship.

A victory parade for the team is scheduled for Saturday, Gov. Ned Lamont announced.

The UConn women’s basketball team, which lost in this year’s Final Four to Iowa, has won a record 11 NCAA championships.
