After hiring 2,500 employees, Electric Boat launches Hire Hartford to recruit more

D. MYLES CULLEN / U.S. DEPARTMENT OF DEFENSE Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff U.S. Army Gen. Martin E. Dempsey visits the General Dynamics Electric Boat Facility in Groton, Conn., Jan. 31, 2013.

Submarine maker Electric Boat hired about 2,500 new employees in the first half of 2024, U.S. Rep. Joe Courtney (D-2nd District) said in a recent meeting with submarine industry stakeholders, almost half of its goal of about 5,200 hires for the year.

The news comes as the Groton-based company expands its recruitment initiative to the Hartford area.

Courtney and U.S. Rep. John Larson (D-1st District) visited the Connecticut Center for Advanced Technology in East Hartford earlier this week to host a roundtable discussion with U.S. Navy officials, Electric Boat and workforce groups in the state to discuss the launch of Hire Hartford, a new hiring effort aimed to recruit residents around the capital city into the submarine manufacturing industry.

The initiative is modeled after the Navy’s 2023 Project Providence campaign in Rhode Island, which led to 155 accepted offers at Electric Boat’s last two signing day events, compared to 14 offers the prior year in 2022, according to Courtney’s announcement.

Hire Hartford also aims to bolster employment at other local submarine industry suppliers, the congressman’s office said.

Electric Boat has been on a hiring blitz for the past several years on the heels of new submarine construction funding from the U.S. Department of Defense. Electric Boat hired 5,300 workers in 2023 and company officials announced a 2024 hiring goal of 5,200 earlier this year.
