AG, DCP warn of unregulated cannabis edibles

Attorney General William Tong issued a public warning about unregulated edible cannabis and hemp products that look like everyday food products like candy or chips.

In a statement, Tong said the Connecticut Poison Control Center received 88 calls in 2020 regarding child exposure to edible marijuana, and 58 calls in the first seven months of 2021.

“These look-alike cannabis products are unregulated, unsafe, and illegal," Tong said. "While Connecticut recently legalized adult-use cannabis, many of these products fall far outside the (THC content) range of what will ever be safe or authorized for sale."

Department of Consumer Protection Commissioner Michelle Seagull said that many of the look-alike products appear identical or nearly identical to brands like Doritos or Fruity Pebbles, but contain high doses of THC.

Under Connecticut law, cannabis products may not be sold under a brand name that is identical or similar to the name of an existing non-cannabis product, Seagull said.

“This is an important consumer safety issue as we prepare for the launch of the adult-use cannabis industry in Connecticut,” Seagull said. “Not only are these products being sold illegally, but the deceptive packaging that does not clearly indicate to the consumer what they are ingesting."
