As senior vice president, claim general counsel at Travelers, where she has worked for more than 18 years, Alexia Cruz leads 1,300 claim legal professionals. Prior to this role, she served as vice president of claim general liability, leading claim professionals who managed litigation and complex claims.

She has been a member of the Connecticut Hispanic Bar Association for more than 20 years, including a term as president.
Q: What’s been your biggest professional accomplishment so far?
I’ve worked very hard to advance in my career and become part of the senior legal team at Travelers, but my favorite professional accomplishment to date has been working with the many talented and accomplished individuals within the organization.
Q: What’s the next big goal you want to accomplish professionally?
I’m passionate about developing future leaders. I want to continue to mentor and sponsor these individuals and to increase diversity at the highest level in our Hartford business community. I plan to accomplish this by getting to know our top talent and offering them my allyship and sponsorship.
Q: What’s one of the biggest professional challenges you’ve overcome?
It’s been a big challenge to try and have a family and advance my career at the same time. When faced with personal challenges, I’ve learned quickly to ask for help in both areas and to take things one hour at a time. I now have a great family and career, but it wasn’t easy.
Q: What are your keys to maintaining business success?
Hard work, continuous learning and adapting to the changing business environment. Also, continuing to nurture existing relationships while making new ones to support this learning and growth mindset. Last but not least, listening to others on the team to find new, innovative ways to move forward.
