Amid heat, Carrier celebrates A/C anniversary

As the temperatures in Hartford soar near 90 degrees, Farmington heating and cooling manufacturer Carrier Corp. is celebrating the 110th anniversary of the invention of air conditioning.

Willis Carrier – founder of Carrier – invented the first way to control humidity in a New York printing plant on July 17, 1902. On that date, Carrier – at the time a research engineer one year removed from Cornell University – finalized the design to keep humidity in the air constant at the Sackett & Williams Lithography and Printing Co. in Brooklyn.

To celebrate the milestone Carrier, the company, launched a new Web site – www.WillisCarrier.com – about the inventor's life and work. He filed more than 80 patents throughout his carrier.

Carrier, the company, also commissioned a book called "Weathermakers to the World" chronicling the history of modern air conditioning.

Carrier is a subsidiary of Hartford conglomerate United Technologies Corp.
