Amid worker shortage, Univ. of St. Joseph offers nursing symposium to high school students

The West Hartford-based University of St. Joseph has announced it will be offering a summer nursing symposium event free of charge for Connecticut high school juniors and seniors.

The symposium will be held from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Aug. 1 through Aug. 5 on the university campus.

The symposium, which is aimed at creating nursing opportunities for high school students, will offer informational sessions about applying to college and preparing for nursing school; interactive simulations in the university’s Nursing Education and Simulation Center; interactions with nursing professionals; demonstrate the diversity in the nursing and health professions; and a tour of the campus.

The symposium is being held as Connecticut’s healthcare industry suffers from a significant shortage of nurses and the state’s colleges can’t keep up with training enough future nurses.

Those attending the symposium must be at least 16 years of age.
