After moving to West Hartford in 2015, Annisa Teich was struck by the area’s small business community. Leveraging her experience working in New York City’s Silicon Alley, she founded a marketing firm, The Small Business Collective, in late 2017 focused on launching and supporting small and micro businesses.
In March 2019, she formed Bromleigh Ventures with her mother and fellow entrepreneur Annette Farese, focused on changing the perceptions of ailing downtowns and commercial neighborhoods.
What’s been your biggest professional accomplishment so far in your career?
Last year we purchased a long-time client — West Hartford Coworking — and moved it from West Hartford Center to New Park Avenue, which was initially met with a lot of skepticism. But we believed in the trajectory of the neighborhood and the value-add we had planned to further support small businesses in the region.
How are you involved in the community?
As a mother and owner of two growing businesses, time is scarce. My involvement with the community is focused on leveraging the space and services we provide to benefit our small business ecosystem. Building relationships and collaborating with nonprofits and clients to create unique experiences in our space, as well as some pro-bono marketing work, are both ways we are able to give back.
What do you like to do outside of work?
I’ve never been one for hobbies. Even when I danced as a child, it was all business for me. When I’m not spending time with my husband and son, I’m messing with new business ideas and logos while watching Queer Eye or Fixer Upper.
My love of the hustle and a dramatic reveal runs deep.
How will the coronavirus pandemic change the way you work long term?
While it won’t change the way I work regarding physical space or total workload — it has shifted how I think about work and my personal life. I still believe work/life balance is a myth but try to practice work/life integration, which requires a more flexible work schedule, staff and collaborators you can trust.
Four reasons why you deserve to be a 40 Under Forty:
Founded and operate two businesses with the singular goal of supporting small businesses throughout our region.
Doubled annual revenue and staff of The Small Business Collective during the height of COVID.
Support and advocate for better workplace treatment and flexibility for working mothers.
Work to raise Hartford’s national profile from the ground up, elevating the small business community in our region vs. looking for others to come “save” us.
My high school has a dance program thanks to the popularity of an independent study I designed my senior year.
