Bridgeport-based Aquarion Water Co., a subsidiary of Eversource, announced Tuesday that it has acquired Ansonia’s municipal wastewater system for $41 million.

Since 2011, Aquarion has taken over 91 water and wastewater systems, many of which were previously owned by Connecticut towns and cities. They include systems in Derby, Canaan, Marlborough, New Fairfield, and New Hartford.

Ansonia Mayor David Cassetti said the sale will help the city focus on funding public safety, education and economic development, while “stabilizing both sewer and tax rates for years to come.”

As part of the sale, Aquarion has agreed to invest $15 million in infrastructure improvements over its first five years of ownership.

Ansonia’s wastewater system serves 5,800 customers.

Aquarion provides water and wastewater treatment in 73 municipalities in Connecticut, Massachusetts and New Hampshire. It is the largest privately-owned water utility in New England.
