As more office workers return, Travelers showcases new 53,000-square-foot employee cafeteria

Contributed Travelers Cos. has a new 53,000-square-foot cafeteria that includes 10 primary food and drink stations and can seat up to 700 employees.

As major downtown Hartford employer Travelers Cos. welcomes more employees back to its offices this spring, it’s greeting workers with a new, expansive cafeteria.

The property and casualty insurer, which updated much of its downtown Hartford office space during the pandemic, is showcasing its 53,000-square-foot cafeteria that includes 10 primary food and drink stations and can seat up to 700 employees.

The new cafeteria, located in the Travelers Plaza building downtown, includes ease-of-use features such as grab-and-go and touchless self-checkout areas, along with collaborative spaces for groups, conferencing capabilities and a teaching kitchen that provides hands-on cooking classes with expert chefs, the company said.

It also includes an indoor, hydroponic garden.

Travelers has undertaken a multiyear plan to renovate most of its downtown Hartford office space. It notified Hartford landlords last year that it planned  to cede about 150,000 square feet of leased space downtown as it consolidates more employees to its owned office buildings, including the iconic Travelers Tower.

The company has been welcoming more of its employees back to the office in recent weeks, after nearly two years of many workers operating remotely. Travelers, however, has adopted a hybrid work environment, in which employees spend some days in the office, and other days working remotely.

The food stations within the new cafeteria include:

  • Tossed: Salads and grain bowls with protein options and Travelers’ hydroponic greens.
  • Salad Bar: Fresh greens, grains, legumes, local vegetables, Mediterranean toppings, seasonal composed salads, fresh crudité, house made and organic dressings, chicken, beef, fish, soups, bread, and rolls.
  • Juiced: Juices and smoothies.
  • Mad Char: Natural smash burgers, grain burgers, turkey burgers, grilled or fried chicken sandwiches, fries, slaw, and more.
  • Mighty Brew: Starbucks specialties. Coffee and bakery items.
  • Melt’d: Melts, hot and ready-to-go sandwiches, paninis and soup.
  • Hearth: New Haven-style pizzas, stromboli, calzones and garlic knots.
  • Teppan: Full wok suite featuring Korean BBQ, Thai curries, beef bulgogi, fried rice bowls, and a sushi station.
  • Chef’s Table: Fully integrated kitchen suite with a tandoori oven. Authentic foods from around the world: Caribbean and Latin America, Japanese, Mediterranean, European, current food trends, and global bowls such as ramen, pho, Indian broth and tabbouleh. Additional ethnic cuisine will be explored through the local community.
  • Main Dish: Rotisserie roasted and smoked entrées, blue-plate specials, hand-carved entrées, savory sides and fresh vegetables.
