A commercial plaza that is under construction in Wethersfield will feature a Starbucks with a drive-thru and a Wingstop restaurant.
The property at 1862 Berlin Turnpike, known as Atlas Commons, will have an 8,094-square-foot building with a new Starbucks as its anchor tenant.
There are three other spaces for tenants, one which was proposed for a hair salon, according to the site plan. On March 19, the property owner – Sullo Investments LLC of Hartford – asked the Planning and Zoning Commission to allow a restaurant with takeout/sit-down dining, Wingstop, to open in the 1,607-square-foot space instead.
The commission unanimously approved the change to the site plan.
The Wingstop will be operated by Papa Soumare of Pawtucket, Rhode Island, who currently runs Wingstop restaurants in Vernon and Hartford.
Wingstop opened its first buffalo-style chicken wing restaurant in Garland, Texas, in 1994, and became a publicly traded company in 2015. It now has more than 2,000 locations.
The project is being developed by Hartford-based Staypoint. There are two remaining spaces that are 1,892 and 3,868 square feet. They are being marketed for retail/medical use.
The property at 1862 Berlin Turnpike was previously home to Atlas Tile, El Pollo Guapo and Pretty Pups and Mutts dog grooming salon.
The current owner acquired the 1.5-acre property for $1.2 million in 2021, and received a demolition permit to raze the previous building and construct a new one in 2022.
The property sits on a section of the Berlin Turnpike that is passed by more than 44,300 vehicles per day, near the intersection with Route 175 and the Newington line.
When completed, the property will have 65 parking spaces.
