The Bridgeport-based Koskoff Koskoff & Bieder attorneys who represented the families of nine of the 26 people who were killed in the 2012 Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting and who won a landmark settlement for $73 million in February against Remington Arms have received a prestigious award from the American Association for Justice (AAJ).
Several Koskoff attorneys traveled to Seattle Tuesday morning to receive the Steven J. Sharp Public Service Award at the AAJ’s annual conference. The award is named after Steven J. Sharp, who lost both arms at the age of 17 because of a defective tractor hay baler. Sharp took the case to court and won an award against the manufacturers.
The Koskoff attorneys agreed to the settlement with the now-bankrupt Remington’s four insurers, who agreed to pay the full amount of coverage available totaling $73 million.
Koskoff partner Alinor Sterling, one of several attorneys who first filed a lawsuit in December 2014 against Remington, told the Hartford Business Journal Tuesday that, “We are so honored and proud that AAJ recognized our clients and the importance of the case and our firm.”
Sterling also said the settlement should be a warning to other gunmakers. The lawsuit hinged, in part, on what the plaintiffs said was Remington’s irresponsible marketing of the AR-15, the weapon used in the Sandy Hook shooting.
“The settlement means gunmakers need to think very carefully about engaging in responsible marketing of their weapons. Remington’s marketing was profoundly irresponsible and dangerous,” Sterling said. “What the settlement means is that gunmakers need to look at their own marketing and their own decisions on how they sell AR-15s, and to whom, and to consider how their actions affect public safety.”
The AAJ – formerly the Association of Trial Lawyers of America – is a nonprofit advocacy and lobbying organization for plaintiffs' lawyers in the United States.
