Popular tourist spots Myrtle Beach, Nashville, Savannah and Charleston will join Avelo Airlines’ roster of southbound routes from Tweed New Haven Airport, the carrier announced Wednesday.
The nonstop flights will start May 5 and Avelo is offering introductory fares of $49 each way to the new destinations.
The new routes are mainly for leisure travel, Avelo spokesman Jim Olson said, “but we would welcome business travelers, too.” Tourist destinations are the airline’s primary focus in its intial service from Tweed, he added.
Avelo CEO Andrew Levy said, “The significant service expansion we announced today builds on the excitement for Avelo we are seeing across Connecticut.”
When the new service starts, Avelo’s Tweed flight will be the only nonstop from Connecticut to Savannah as well as the only nonstop service from southern Connecticut to Myrtle Beach, Charleston and Nashville.
The new flights boost Avelo’s service from Tweed to 10 total destinations, six of them in Florida and all in the Southeast.
The airline announced last week it would double its workforce in New Haven in the coming year, from its 109 local employees as of February to more than 200. Avelo has flown more than 600 flights and transported 70,000 passengers since it launched service from Tweed on Nov. 3, 2021.
Avelo expects to take delivery of three more Boeing aircraft in coming months, doubling its New Haven-based fleet to six total planes. Avelo flies 147-seat 737-700 planes and has named New Haven as its East Coast base. Nationwide, Avelo said it plans to boost its destinations from 18 to 40 by the end of 2022.
With expansion in mind, the airline announced last month it had raised $42 million in Series B funding and grown its invested capital base to over $160 million.
