Avelo Airlines cuts service at Tweed New Haven Airport; several routes take ‘seasonal break’

Avelo Airlines will end service from Tweed New Haven Airport to Melbourne, Florida on Jan. 7, 2024 due to low demand, the company confirmed Wednesday.

The discount airline began running twice weekly flights from New Haven to Melbourne Orlando International Airport (MLB) in June.

“Unfortunately, MLB has not generated the demand we expected and has been underperforming in future bookings,” Avelo spokeswoman Courtney Goff said. “This was not the outcome we envisioned…”

Flights to Melbourne will be available through Jan. 6. Customers who booked flights after that date can receive refunds or exchange their tickets for flights to Daytona Beach, Florida or Orlando, Florida, which Avelo will continue to serve via Tweed.

Also, Avelo has suspended service to Savannah, Georgia until March 8, 2024, at which point it’s scheduled to return.

Other seasonal changes at Tweed include:

  • Charleston, South Carolina – Flies Dec. 21 to Jan. 7, 2024, takes a seasonal break and returns March 8, 2024
  • Greenville/Spartanburg, South Carolina – Flies Dec. 1 to Jan. 8, takes a seasonal break and returns Feb. 15, 2024

Avelo said in a statement that the first quarter typically has lower demand in these markets, so it decided to use this time to reduce service as it prepares for peak spring/summer travel.

Avelo flies to 18 destinations from Tweed and recently added service to San Juan, Puerto Rico.
