Avelo Airlines hits 500K passenger mark at Tweed

Just short of a year after launching service, Avelo Airlines on Thursday announced it had flown more than 500,000 passengers to and from Tweed-New Haven Airport. 

The total marked a 1,150% jump from Tweed’s passenger numbers from 2019, its last full year of pre-pandemic air service. 

Thursday also saw the takeoff of Avelo’s 10,000th flight since the budget airline’s debut in California 18 months ago. That flight, from New Haven to Chicago, was celebrated with a blues performance by the Chicago Dawgs in the Tweed terminal. All 130 passengers booked on the flight also got a free round-trip ticket. 

Avelo Chairman and CEO Andrew Levy said, “This double milestone spotlights Tweed’s growing popularity among Connecticut residents and out-of-state visitors.”

Avelo currently operates 14 nonstop routes from New Haven, its East Coast hub. The airline serves 31 destinations nationwide and has launched a southeast hub in Orlando. 

Tweed-New Haven Airport Executive Director Sean Scanlon said, “For decades, the people, families and businesses of southern Connecticut have been asking for an airport that meets their needs. Thanks to our growing partnership with Avelo Airlines, we’ve given them the airport they want and deserve.”

A proposed new terminal building at Tweed to accommodate increasing traffic awaits approvals from federal and local governments. The mayor of East Haven, which is home to part of the facility, has vowed to oppose the expansion.

Service to all of Avelo’s Florida destinations was returning to normal this week after disruption from Hurricane Ian. Southwest Florida International Airport, which serves devastated areas in and around Fort Myers, reopened to commercial flights on Wednesday. 

Avelo flights to Fort Myers are scheduled to resume Saturday from New Haven, spokesperson Jim Olson said. Due to the airport’s reduced capacity, the schedule may change going forward, he added.
